A Franciscan family at the service of humanity

The Franciscan Missionaries of Mary are an international congregation of religious women, founded in 1877 by Blessed Mary of the Passion, present today in more than seventy countries.

Our mission

To advance charitable works, support vulnerable individuals, provide community welfare and promote social care and education — living the Franciscan values of compassion, solidarity and simplicity in County Galway and across Ireland.

History & heritage

  1. 1877

    Foundation

    Hélène de Chappotin — Mary of the Passion — founds the Franciscan Missionaries of Mary in India, with a vision of universal mission.

  2. 20th century

    Growth across the world

    Sisters go out to every continent, opening schools, clinics and houses of welcome among the poorest.

  3. Ireland

    Service in Ireland

    The Sisters establish a presence in Ireland, serving through education, healthcare, pastoral care and outreach.

  4. Today

    Tuam, Co. Galway

    From Vicar Street, the Corporation of Trustees continues the charitable work of the Sisters as a registered Irish charity (RCN 20014575).

Board of Trustees

The charity is governed by a Corporation of Trustees, who carry legal responsibility for its property, finances and charitable activities. Trustees serve on a voluntary basis, meet regularly, and ensure that all activity is consistent with the charity's objects and Irish charity law.

Chairperson

Leads the Board and ensures good governance and accountability.

Treasurer

Oversees financial controls, budgeting and the annual accounts.

Secretary

Maintains records, registrations and correspondence with the Regulator.

Trustees

Share in decision-making and oversight of programmes and safeguarding.
